Week 1: Getting Things Started

It’s been my plan from the very beginning to document the entire design and construction process… and having spent a little more time than expected, I’ve finally got the site up and running. It’s still very much a work in progress, but it’s finally come together.

My goal is to make a weekly update every Saturday, plus individual posts about the various decisions we’re going to face throughout the entire process. I’ll explain some of the technical decisions (such as my recent PEX vs Copper post), plus I’ll share some of the finishings we’re considering. I’m torn if I want to open up the budget for discussion, but I may as it’ll obviously play a huge role in this endeavor.

In the coming weeks, I’m also going to place a webcam across the street from the house so I can document the actual construction process. And yes, I’ll ultimately process a timelapse video of the demolition and construction.

Great site and good luck with the project
Are you going to post costs and compare Reg construction costs
vs going green to see the diff , pay back period & long term
    benefits.
    Thx

We are indeed planning to share the budget when we’re complete, but I’m not sure we’ll do a green vs regular comparison for each line item (that would be incredibly time consuming).

I can say that “building green” definitely costs more, but you’re also getting a far superior structure, regardless of the eco benefits. You can call it “green construction”... but you might as well just call it “smarter construction”.

I’ve also got the budget from our initial drawings, which will at least give you a decent idea of the cost differences, although it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison.
